Tofukuji bridge, viewed from covered bridge54 / 99
I took the bus from Sanjusangendo to Tofukuji, which turned out to be rather troublesome. Tofukuji is not obviously marked (go east from the bus stop, not to the obvious temple across the street to the west). Keep going along the road until you go through a covered bridge; Tofukuji is on the left a few minutes afterwards. I got pretty annoyed at this temple. I paid the admission for the gardens, so I could walk across this cool-looking bridge. Unfortunately, that is about all there was (well, a covered walkway and a small and unimpressive garden, as well), but it cost 500 yen to find that out. Then they wanted another 500 yen for the temple and abbott’s lodge, and even though there was a nice looking rock garden on the picture, I really didn’t feel like paying the temple another 500 yen (about US$ 5), so I skipped it. Unless you are dying to walk across the bridge, try the abbott’s lodge.
