Rock garden at Ryouanji17 / 22
You can see that each of these rocks has a fair amount of visual interest. Here the ground cover provides a well-defined visual island for the rock, without being so large as to detract from the rock itself. The four contrasting shapes give the viewer a peaceful, settled feeling. I tried staring at the rocks and emptying my mind after I had taken all the pictures I could imagine. My thoughts are incessantly running through my mind, but the stable, peaceful views, the artistic excellence, the visual interest, and, frankly, the brightness of the white pebbles, made it very easy to stare at them without thinking of anything.

There are fifteen rocks, only fourteen of which are visible in any one view. Supposedly if you can see the fifteenth rock, you have achieved enlightenment, presumably because if you comprehend that you are Buddha-nature and are part of the universal Buddha-nature, you will comprehend everything, including the location of the fifteenth rock.
