Regardless, of poorly done renovations, I found the mosaics stunning, in some ways more impressive than the true Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. Perhaps it is the background of gold. It’s hard not to be stunning with that. Interestingly, the gold itself is mosaiced, it is not a background of gold leaf.
