The paved trail ends as it dead ends into the Virgin River that cut Zion Canyon. The trail continues for several miles, including through some picturesque slot canyons. However, you have to walk through the water for a large part of the way, and wet rocks with a bad knee seemed like an unwise combination. It really hurt not to be able to see (and photograph) the slot canyons, though...
