The amazing thing about the canyons in the American West, Canyonlands in particular, is how the land is all flat and then suddenly a deep canyon appears, vertical cliffs and all. After driving for miles of grassland, the canyon appears to the left (east) just before the Visitors’ Center. A little further is the Shafer Canyon Overlook.
