Almost at the chimneys; head for the lone chimeny on the left. Like many of the vertical formations in Big Bend, the chimneys were once magma columns that pushed upward but did not break through the surface. Once they cooled, the resulting rock was harder than the surrounding rock, so as it weathered away, the magma-rock remained, giving these columns.
Do not try to walk to the gulch in the background. It looks like it is only a few miles away, but that is because it is huge. It is really about twenty miles away!
