The ocotillo plants are a distinctive feature of the Chihuahan desert. The flowers are little flames at the top, and if there is enough water, leaves will appear at the thorns. It is difficult to see in the picture, but in addition to their unusual twisted shape, the thorns are actually conical, so the stalks have a very unusual sawtooth profile.
