Every Buddhist temple and major Shinto shrine has a place to buy fortunes and prayers. You can buy wooden plaques, write your prayer on it, and then put it on the rack on the right. I think they are burned in a bonfire ceremony. The fortunes range from bad, not as bad, neutral, kind of good, and great. Some Japanese place great store in these fortunes; my friend knows a woman who kept her good fortune in her purse all year. She had to go to several temples before she got a good one, though. There is usually a wire rack to tie up an unwanted fortune so it does not come true.
