Sand cones
The Kamigamo shrine is one of a pair of Shinto shrines outside of ancient Kyoto. It is the up-river shrine, dedicated to the thunder god. Founded in 678, it became important due to Imperial patronage. The iconic sand cones apparently commemorate trees that once welcomed spirits.

Kamigamo can be reached via the Kyoto sightseeing bus from Kinkakuji.
