I had read that seeing an opera in the Arena di Verona was a lifetime
experience, and since I was there on the penultimate day of the opera festival,
I bought a ticket for The Barber of Seville. Walking into the arena
was amazing, going through huge two-thousand year old barrel vaults, so old that
the bricks and stone looked very round on the edges, even in the ceiling. It
looked very much like a modern (American) football stadium, only without the
ugly cement. Unfortunately, it was too dark and too expansive to have any hope
of capturing it with a camera.
