The interior of the cathedral is rather disappointing. I think this
is because the exterior is so lavish that the interior is rather plain by
comparison, since if you dropped this interior into any building in the US it
would seem spectacular. The squareness of the columns and the hints of
Classicism add to the coldness, as does the sheer size. I wonder if the
flooring also has something to do with the feel, as it was done in in the 1500s,
during the height of Renaissance Classicism, which I find cold.
The interior is surprisingly dark; it seemed much darker to me than Santa Maria
Novella.
