The basicilia was built in the early 500s as King Theodoric’s palace chapel. Theodoric was Arian, so many of the original mosaics were destroyed when he was driven out. In 856 the relics of Saint Apollinare, the first bishop of Ravenna were transferred here from Classe to protect them from raiders. The bell tower is from about that time.
