Doge is pronounced like “dohj” (like “dodge” except sounding like d-oh-dge instead of d-ah-dge). He was elected leader of Venice for life by election from members of the Venice elite. Various laws successfully prevented the Doge from becoming a monarch, although the office had a strong oligarchical element to it.
