This is the where the ore was crushed. The crushed ore then filtered
into a pool of mercury in the sections nearest the camera. Operators (teenage
boys) would stir the mercury mixture until the foreman deemed it the right color,
whereupon the stamp on the section would be halted and the mixture taken to be
purified.
Bodie had at least nine stamp mills, pounding away day and night six days of
the week, with a rest on Sunday. On Sunday, Bodie babies could not sleep because
it was so unusually quiet.
