Tesla Transformer in Standard Mine stamp mill, Bodie, CA55 / 62
Wood for the steam boiler was costing the Standard Mine $22,000 (about $500,000) per year, so they built a hydroelectic dam and hired Westinghouse Company to transmit the power using alternating current. This was an innovation over Edison’s direct current that enabled transmitting power over long distances. This transformer is one of the few extant designed by Nikola Tesla.
