The visitor’s center and hotel sits on top of the edge of a butte with a view of much of the valley. The road wanders past the mittens (the nearer buttes) and then among the buttes to the right. This picture was taken relatively early in the morning, so traffic on the road was relatively light.

The road is unpaved, and can be driven with a car if you drive slowly (I saw one guy in an old Honda Civic or the equivalent Toyota), but I would recommend taking a higher clearance vehicle.
