Here is a canyon, just beautiful. By now you can probably tell the rock layers. The deceivingly flat area is the Chinle Formation, with the waterway beginning to cut its way into the Moenkopi Formation at this point. The Chinle Formation was formed by meandering rivers, shallow lakes, and swamps, so you can imagine a pleasant land, unconstrained by the massive cliffs, with early frogs croaking (but no turtles), possibily populated with conifers.
Here I made a huge mistake: imagine how awesome the canyon would look if I could look down along it!
