Remember that gulch visible from the Chimneys Trail? Here it is: Santa Elena Canyon, carved by the relentless Rio Grande. The canyon is about 1500 feet tall. You can get some sense of perspective by the railings of the trail climbing the righthand side. Mexico is across the river on the left side.
The Santa Elena Canyon trail is only about half a mile, ending when the river fills the canyon, so I had assumed it was kind of a lame trail. I was very mistaken, this is definitely one of the must-see trails.
