I caught an agave plant in the act of growing its seed spike. Also known as the century plant, it will live normally for 20 - 50 years or so, and then send up this single spike, which will branch out into seed pods (pollinated by Mexican long-nosed bats). Then the plant dies. The variety shown here is a Agave havardiana.
