To the right are some magma pillars that cooled and are slowly being revealed by erosion. The white areas are ash from eruptions about 35 million years ago.

The small plants with banana-shaped leaves in the foreground is Agave lechuguilla, a kind of agave that is found only in the Chihuahuan Desert. The Native Americans used it for making rope and soap.
