The Basin is surrounded by mountains; to the north the mountains have eroded into rounded pieces. You can see a close-up here, along with an agave plant’s seed tree. There are three main varieties of agave in Big Bend. This one, Agave havardiana, lives for a couple decades and then sends up this stalk, after which it dies.
